Athlete’s Wallet: distributed territorial licenses for global interoperable services.

  • In Q4.2026 all the EU Member States (+ other countries) will release official Digital Identity wallets.
  • These wallets will support official IDs (mobile driving license, national ID, passport in the future) + official credentials (social security attestations, academic diplomas, etc.). Different architectures.
  • These wallets will enable more use cases.
  • Territorial federations should consider issuing, presenting credentials digitally (e.g., interoperability of licenses, official identification of athletes in competitions abroad?, session ranking certificate for public grants?)

I believe this is an interesting topic to explore and present some ideas about how we could make the most of this regulation with the main objective of the conference: digital transformation of athletics. No underlying technologies imposed, only a few standards to guarantee the interoperability.

@espinr I think this is a great topic and definitely worth addressing during the conference!

I can also imagine it being useful to allow athletes to “claim” their personal profiles on the results platform simply by logging in with a digital wallet that contains their verified identity

I think this is also very useful for coaches, and officials/judges, who have qualifications, and in many countries need to be re-validated by police every 3 years to be e.g. allowed to work with children.

We have some very tech-savvy federations who already issue athlete ID cards. In the Balkans athletes need an up-to-date medical certificate to say they are healthy to compete.

I’m presuming there are web standards already on how one creates a link or file that can be added to such a wallet; it would be great to have a talk on this.

Hoping we get somebody coming from Saudi or UAE. They have an advanced digital framework with a national “single-sign-on” app carried by 17 million people, which can prove your ID. Not quite the same thing, but a related very interesting story.

Dears. Its great to read about official IDs and Athlete’s Wallet as topics for the upcoming AthTech25 :flexed_biceps:

Here in Switzerland, Swiss Athletics together with the association of major running events (Swiss Runners) are currently piloting a decentralized approach for a SwissRunning ID and a number of planned accompanying verifiable (digital) credentials. They are stored in a wallet App in line with the upcoming Swiss e-ID and its self-sovereign identity (SSI) principles. With this we aim for true digital sovereignity for runners, more interoperability for digital services (like events, timekeepers, brands, mobility providers…) and more security for all!

See more in our WhitePaper: https://www.swiss-running.ch/wp-content/uploads/sites/16/2024/10/Running_ID_Whitepaper.pdf

A project website is soon going online and 2 user tests are planned for event registration of two city running events (July / Oct).

In the EU similar SSI initiatives are well under way: EU Digital Identity Wallet Home - EU Digital Identity Wallet -

We would love to connect at the AthTech25, share insights and find collaborations. The timing couldn’t be any better.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Best Thomas (Project Lead SwissRunning ID)

Great to hear that. It will be fantastic to hear more about that and see how we can find a global interoperable solution.

Thomas, this will be fascinating. I think there’s a pressing need for a trans-national solution as well. Could I ask you to re-post this as a separate thread, and then we can organise any discussion around that?

This is also incredibly relevant to Masters athletics. For all of these competitions, people from 20-30 countries need to prove their age and nationality, or enter the race then “be approved by” a national team approver which takes a lot of time. I’ve mentioned this topic to European and British Masters
