Since the last time we met in the AthTech webinar, I’ve been participating in different forums related to digital identity, and the upcoming use cases for the European Digital Identity (EUDI) ecosystem, that is slowly being introduced in public and private sectors. I’ve mentioned our discussions and ideas to apply the same concept of digital credentials to athletics and the reaction was unanimously positive and all of them (so far) confirmed that this EUDI concept and technologies are pefect to be applied to the future of athletics.
I spoke to W3C and Linux Foundation and they like the idea of bringing this new use case (athletics credentials/attestations/licenses) to the ecosystem, and both organizations agreed to propose a joint session on our topic for the upcoming Global Digital Cooperation (GDC) to be held in Geneva (CH) on 1–3 September 2026. The GDC is a large event co-organized by the UN and dozens of standards and open source bodies (W3C, ISO, Eclipse Foundation…). It is a huge event, that gathers 1000+ participants. Last year one of the main topics was EUDI wallets, so our innovative proposal might fit well.
Since they liked the idea, I’ve shared a proposal for a panel to discuss the future of digital credentials in athletics (and other sports), as continuation of the AthTech discussions. There, we can find some synergies with other projects, including the EU-funded Large Scale Pilots, that could support the development and roll-out of pilots in specific federations.
It still need to be accepted, but please block the dates in case you could attend (1-3 September). It could be a good option to meet again and have further discussions on the topic, and see if we can get support from other entities interested.
